After a three-year pause, the Pelagic California Tuna Challenge made a much-anticipated return from August 22nd to August 24th, 2025. Held in the rich fishing grounds of Southern California, 21 teams took to the water, all eager to compete for a share of over $96,000 in cash and prizes.
Team RJJ & CSI emerged victorious, landing a remarkable 138-pound bluefin tuna. "This tournament is a highlight of our fishing season, and we are incredibly proud to come out on top this time," said a representative from Team RJJ & CSI.
The revamped tournament format allowed for greater flexibility. Participants could depart from any Southern California port of their choice and were tasked with bringing in their heaviest tuna to weigh at one of three locations: San Diego Marlin Club, Balboa Angling Club, or the scenic Avalon on Catalina Island.
According to the tournament organizers, “The new format maximized the fishing experience by allowing teams to fish continuously for 34 hours while making strategic decisions for weighing their catches.” This approach provided an innovative twist that excited veterans and newcomers alike.
Participants not only aimed for top placements but also for various jackpots. Team BLUEFINish landed in second place with a strong 129-pound bluefin, taking home $2,100 alongside other prizes. They expressed satisfaction with their performance, saying, "We put in the hours and strategy, and it paid off. The competition was fierce but fair."
Equally competitive was Team Cut Loose, also catching a 129-pound bluefin and securing third place with $840 in prizes. The variations in catch emphasized the abundance of fish in Southern California’s nutrient-rich waters, an enthusiasm echoed by many participants.
One of the standout features of this year’s event was the introduction of jackpot categories. Team One, Two, Tres took home a whopping $70,000 in the aggregate jackpot category with a combined weight of 212 pounds from their catches. They remarked, "Winning the jackpot was the icing on the cake for our team. The camaraderie and competition make this tournament special."
Adding to their haul, Team Boundless claimed victory in the yellowtail jackpot with a 27-pound yellowtail, earning an additional $800. The enthusiasm for these competing categories reflects the diverse fishing opportunities present in the region.
The Pacific waters, known for their richness, once again delivered as expected. Participants encountered large schools of foaming tuna, which fueled the excitement throughout the competition. “Fishing in this area is always thrilling; it’s what keeps us coming back year after year,” a local angler stated.
Support from prominent fishing industry brands played a critical role in the tournament's success. Partners included Turtle Box, Morita Custom Gaffs, Okuma Reels, and Danco Pliers, among others. Tournament organizers expressed gratitude, stating, “Their support helps us elevate this event to new heights each year and reinforces the sense of community among fishing enthusiasts.”
In conclusion, the Pelagic California Tuna Challenge showcased not only the vibrancy of Southern California's fishing scene but also the community's resilience and passion for sport fishing. As organizers noted, “We look forward to growing this event and bringing it back for years to come.” The successful navigation of logistics, including flexible weigh stations and a continuous fishing period, proved to contribute positively to the participants’ overall experience.
The tournament’s return after a lengthy hiatus speaks volumes about the area’s sustained fishery strength and further reinforces Southern California's reputation as a premier destination for sport fishing.
