NEMO Equipment has made a significant stride in outdoor gear sustainability with the launch of the Dagger OSMO tent, recognized as the first backpacking tent to receive the bluesign® PRODUCT certification. This notable achievement symbolizes NEMO's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and clean chemistry in its manufacturing processes.
The Dagger OSMO is crafted from 100% recycled materials and utilizes solution-dyed fabrics that are free from PFAS and flame-retardant chemicals. "In the fall of 2023, our Product team set out to take Dagger further by not only using 100% recycled fabrics that are free of PFAS and added fire retardant chemicals, but by creating the industry’s first bluesign® tent," said Gabi Rosenbrien, Product Development Director at NEMO. This tent not only meets rigorous performance standards but also demonstrates NEMO’s dedication to responsible chemical management.
Traditionally, the camping tent category has faced challenges when it comes to sustainability. Backpacking tents must be lightweight, durable, and UV-resistant, often requiring chemicals that can harm both the environment and human health. "Achieving bluesign® PRODUCT for the Dagger OSMO tent demonstrates the progress we can make when brands are willing to challenge the status quo in product design," noted Daniel Rufenacht, CEO of bluesign®. "By prioritizing clean chemistry and sustainability, NEMO is setting an inspiring example for the outdoor industry, proving that exceptional performance and responsible manufacturing can go hand in hand."
The Dagger OSMO features an updated pole structure using NEMO’s custom Elements™ hardware, which enhances the tent's interior space and optimizes the entrance and peak height without adding extra weight. It increases the vestibule's usable storage by 22% through the new Stash™ volumizing strut, making it more practical for backpackers. Additionally, the Divvy Cube™ design has been improved to make packing easier and weight distribution more efficient when sharing gear.
For those interested in additional details about NEMO’s sustainability initiatives, the company has shared its 2023 Sustainability Report alongside a range of recyclable sleeping bags and backpacks. This commitment to the environment and the exploration of new materials potentially reshaped the future of camping gear.
With the Dagger OSMO, NEMO Equipment is not only reinforcing its reputation as a leader in outdoor innovation but is also paving the way for a more sustainable future in the camping industry. As consumers become more environmentally conscious, NEMO stands out as an educator and trendsetter in how outdoor products are developed.
