"Since we were unsure exactly how we wanted to organize our gear or what our ideal layout would be, this minimal build gave us flexibility to move things around and adjust as we go," they added. This choice facilitates easy adjustments while retaining accessibility to the original seating when necessary.
The intention behind this particular build was straightforward: create a level surface in the back of the 4Runner for a comfortable sleeping experience. The creator avoided overly complex designs. "We didn’t want to overcommit with drawers or permanent structures, so we kept things basic," the camper remarked. This simplicity allows for straightforward construction without specialized tools; hardware stores such as Home Depot can cut the wood to size upon request.
The materials used for the platform included: truck bed liner spray paint, sanders, screws, a plywood sheet cut to specific dimensions, and support pieces cut from 2x4s. "We sanded the edges of the plywood, sprayed it with truck bed liner to prevent items from moving, and then stapled carpet over the top for comfort and noise reduction," they explained. The use of 2x4s provides necessary support to level the surface over the folded seats, ideally suited for both sleeping and equipment organization.
Added comforts enhance the overall camping experience, making nights spent in the 4Runner feel more like home. One essential item is a folding memory foam mattress. “The most important part of your car camping setup is your sleeping system. A comfortable, supportive bed that folds up when not in use makes sleeping in the 4Runner feel like a real bed,” highlighted the enthusiast. Adjustments were made, such as trimming the mattress to fit snugly between the vehicle’s wheel wells.
